Vietnam News, Hanoi, December 10, 2011. The Ha Noi Declaration on ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity on minerals was adopted at the end of the third ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Minerals, which opened in the capital city yesterday.

Ministers from 10 member countries re-affirmed their joint commitment to enhancing co-operation on minerals, which they deemed as a resource to develop regional trade and co-operation.

They also agreed to not only develop mineral resources in a sustainable manner but to maximise profits through further investment and the use of technology.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said Viet Nam was ready to share experiences in management, exploration and use of minerals with other ASEAN member countries.

Viet Nam aims to create a unified policy on trade and investment in minerals within the bloc to boost implementation of the ASEAN Mineral Co-operation Action Plan for the 2010-2015 period.

Hai also emphasised the need to discuss and create a sustainable development strategy for exploration and preservation of minerals in ASEAN countries and launch a communication campaign to raise public awareness of the socio-economic and environmental aspects of mineral deposits.

In a plenary session chaired by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang, participants discussed the potential of natural resources and minerals in the region, which is one of the world major suppliers of raw minerals. — VNS
